My name is Anakana Schofield or AK for short. My main preoccupations, alongside reading, writing sentences and novels, are the weather, public health and labour history. I am the author of the 2020 Goldsmiths Prize shortlisted novel BINA – A Novel in Warnings (NYRB (US), Knopf Canada, Fleet, Little Brown UK). I also wrote the 2015 Giller Prize shortlisted, acclaimed novel MARTIN JOHN, which was also a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and The (UK) Goldsmiths Prize. Martin John received Editors’ Choice in the New York Times and was named on many Best Books of 2015 lists. My debut novel MALARKY (2012) won the 2012 Amazon.ca First Novel Award and the 2013 Debut-Litzer Prize for Fiction in the United States and was a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. It was named on 16 Best Books of 2012 lists and was selected as a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Pick.

I have appeared at writers festivals all over Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. I have written for newspapers including The Guardian, The Irish Times, The Globe and Mail, The National Post. I also contribute to the London Review of Books blog.

I have also authored a paste-up art book Rereading the Riot Act and On related to a curatorial residency I undertook with UNIT-PITT projects. My recent anthology publications include: The Long Gaze Back – An Anthology of Irish Women Writers, edited by Sinéad Gleeson (New Island 2015), Alchemy – Writers on Truth, Lies and Fiction (Notting Hill Editions, 2016) and Little Star – edited by Ann Kjellberg (2013).
