Raucous, fun discussion and dinner last night with artists, librarian, musician friends, who generously delivered me to the “stacks” in their basement to choose some books to adopt. Ha! I am feasting upon a book with a section about the miners strike in 1934 in Flin Flon and women’s role. Nabbed a few other odd 80’s BC books including a part II of a book called Portage.
Thrilled to discover another acquaintance I ran into in a caff has both of Juan Butler’s other books that I have been hunting for and very determined to read!
Recently (and at said above gathering) we encountered Wii Rockband. So much fun! I played some other sports games like football that was so unbelievably difficult I am certain going to medical school would be less taxing than try to get these mini fellas to stop running off the pitch. It tumbled me into a state of dizziness after 7 mins to a cacophony of small male groaning as I could not manage to keep my players on the pitch. Then out of nowhere, I don’t know what I pushed or how but I scored a goal! That turned small male groaning to small male astonishment a bit of … bloody hell what just happened. Unfortunately an experience I could not repeat. But so much fun. Too much fun. Waving things in the air, whacking drumsticks and punk rock singing impressions. I could be v tempted by it.
Bockety Greenhouse building success has given rise to a new ambition, unfortunately it is a straight back somersault (or layaway).
A highly disturbing Guardian report this weekend on female circumcision (British resource here) and it’s possible proliferation in Britain caused me to recall the work of Southall Black Sisters whose work I was aware of and admired in my early twenties living in London.
I caught up reading about their ongoing work on their website and noticed they have a campaign song and have published their own books in addition to their vital advocacy work. Brava.
Whenever I have cause to make a lamb shepherds pie I watch neurosurgery videos on youtube for company, while I am peeling and chopping. In contrast to “how to clean your make up brushes” the neurosurgery videos average 2-3 mins, except the one on prefrontal tuberculoma dating from 1933, which is in the 9 min range. The mechanics in that film are fascinating.
I like to point out that 2 mins is insufficient to peel and chop a bunch of carrots into strips.
I’m just saying ….
Neurosurgeons could you think of the carrot chopping factor and keep the camera rolling a bit ….
Usually at this time of year I am in full steam storm watching mode. My East-Coast amigas can expect emails inquiring of wind speeds and warning to bolt the barn door closed.
This year tho’ I have broadened my disaster horizons and am also watching local wildfires.
Here are the current wildfires of note (http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imf5/imf.jsp?site=pub_fireinfo)
There are currently 0 fires in the coastal region caused by lightening and 0 fires in coastal region caused by man. There have been 75 fires this year in the coastal region. There have been 647 fires in the Province so far this year. The total area burnt so far is 22,978 Ha. There were 5 new fires discovered today alone in the Province.
When the Burns Bog caught fire in 2005 it smelt like rural Ireland everywhere in the city.
If you want to see something astonishing: compare the map image of fires started by lightning in 2008 with 2009. 2009 looks like a lava lamp.
